TCP/IP is an acronym which stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol.  They are two separate protocols used together which underlie all internet based communications between computer systems. The TCP protocol establishes a method for chunks of data to be broken up into packets and sent to a destination for reassembly and confirmation of successful delivery. The IP protocol establishes an addressing scheme for networked computers so that transmitted packets of data will reach their proper destination.
